Death of Tito

1980 · Event

The partisan who built and held Yugoslavia for 35 years dies at 87, and 128 states send delegations to the largest state funeral in history to that date. He leaves a rotating eight-man presidency designed so no successor can replace him — and without him, no one can hold the republics together either.
