The 16th Street Baptist Church bombing
1963 · Event
Eighteen days after the March on Washington, Klansmen dynamite Birmingham's most prominent Black church on a Sunday morning, killing four girls aged 11 to 14 in the basement dressing room. The murders horrify the nation and harden support for the civil rights bill working through Congress.
