A thousand volunteers, many of them white northern students, pour into Mississippi to register Black voters in the most closed society in America. Three of them — Chaney, Goodman and Schwerner — are murdered by the Klan in the project's first days; the search for their bodies puts Mississippi's terror on every front page.
