Genoese ships out of the Black Sea bring the pestilence to the greatest city of the Christian east, where it kills — among tens of thousands — the emperor's thirteen-year-old son. From the Golden Horn the shipping lanes carry it everywhere: Alexandria by autumn, Sicily by October, Marseille by All Saints'.
