Manco Inca besieges Cusco

1536–1537 · Event

The puppet emperor escapes his humiliations and returns with the greatest army the Incas ever fielded — perhaps 100,000 men — trapping 190 Spaniards inside Cusco for ten months. The desperate night storming of the fortress of Sacsayhuamán saves them; Manco withdraws to the cloud forest of Vilcabamba to fight on for a generation.
