The conquerors fall to fighting over the spoils: followers of his executed rival Almagro burst into Pizarro's Lima palace on a Sunday and cut down the 63-year-old marquess, who dies drawing a cross on the floor in his own blood. Of the men who took an empire, almost none die in bed.
