The Dogger Bank incident

1904 · Event

Steaming through the North Sea at night, Russia's Baltic Fleet mistakes Hull's fishing trawlers for Japanese torpedo boats — six thousand miles from Japan — and opens fire, killing three British fishermen. Britain, Japan's ally, comes within days of war before Russia apologises and pays up; the fleet sails on towards its real catastrophe.
