Mao proclaims the Jiangxi Soviet
1931 · Event
Driven out of the cities, the Communists build a state in the mountains of Jiangxi — the Chinese Soviet Republic, with Mao as chairman, its own currency, land reform and a Red Army of 100,000. Chiang's five encirclement campaigns to crush it end by forcing the breakout that becomes the Long March.
