The Xi'an Incident
1936 · Event
Ordered to fight Communists while Japan swallows the north, the Manchurian marshal Zhang Xueliang instead kidnaps his own commander-in-chief. Chiang is released only after agreeing to a second united front against Japan — the civil war goes into storage for eight years, and the Communists, nearly finished in 1936, use them to grow a hundredfold.
