With Spain's government drowned by Napoleon, the citizens of Buenos Aires depose the viceroy and elect their own junta — governing, at first, in the captive king's name. The 25th of May becomes Argentina's founding date, and the pattern repeats across the continent within months: juntas first, independence when the mask slips.
