The French conquest of West Africa

Column by column, France conquers an empire from the Senegal to Lake Chad — breaking the Tukulor and Wassoulou states, capturing the resistance leader Samori Touré after a sixteen-year war, and binding a third of the continent's map in French blue. It is the Scramble's largest single haul, taken almost entirely by African soldiers under French officers.
