Out of drought, famine and fury at missionaries and railways, a movement of village martial-arts societies — the Fists of Righteous Harmony, 'Boxers' to foreigners — begins killing Chinese Christians and burning churches, believing their rituals turn bullets aside. The court in Beijing cannot decide whether to crush them or aim them.
