As the Eight-Nation Alliance breaches the walls, Cixi dresses as a peasant, has the Guangxu Emperor's favourite concubine thrown down a well, and escapes in a cart on a two-month flight to Xi'an — styled, in court language, an 'inspection tour of the west'. She returns sixteen months later to a capital under foreign occupation.
