Sixty years after the last western emperor fell, an eastern Roman army marches through the Asinarian Gate and Rome is Roman again — taken by a general with 5,000 men and held, through a year-long Gothic siege, with defiance and dwindling grain. The city will change hands three more times in the ruinous war that follows.
