The empress dies of cancer at about 48, and something in the reign dies with her: Justinian, who never remarries in his remaining seventeen years, swears his oaths thereafter 'by the name of Theodora'. Her legal legacy outlives them both — rights for actresses, divorced women and the daughters she had laws written to protect.
