Sprung from the Archbishop's prison by the Kentish rebels, the hedge-priest John Ball gives the great sermon of the English radical tradition to the host camped above London: 'When Adam delved and Eve span, who was then the gentleman?' Things will not go well in England, he preaches, until all things are held in common.
