Hubert hanged on a false confession

A French watchmaker, Robert Hubert, confesses — falsely, impossibly, and probably out of derangement — to starting the fire, and is hanged at Tyburn while the mob looks for Catholic plots. The Monument's inscription blames 'the treachery and malice of the Popish faction' for a century and a half, until 1830 finally chisels the libel off.
