Seventy-eight gladiators fight their way out of Batiatus's training school with kitchen skewers and cleavers, seize a wagon of gladiatorial weapons on the road, and fortify themselves on Vesuvius. Their elected leaders: two Gauls, and a Thracian named Spartacus who had once served in a Roman auxiliary. Rome sends a praetor with a militia, expecting police work.
