With Spartacus penned in Bruttium after a pirate fleet took his money and sailed away, Crassus digs a ditch and wall thirty-five miles across the peninsula's toe to starve him out. Spartacus breaks through on a snowy night — filling the ditch with earth, brushwood and corpses — but loses men he cannot replace, with Pompey's veteran army now marching home from Spain.
