Azuchi Castle rises

On a hill above Lake Biwa, Nobunaga builds something Japan has never seen: not a fortress but a seven-storey lacquered and gilded tower, its top floors decorated by the finest painters of the age — power as spectacle. Burned days after his death, it gives its name to the whole era; every later castle, Himeji included, descends from it.
