Death of Hideyoshi — the regents' pact

1598 · Event

Dying with his heir aged five, Hideyoshi binds the five greatest lords by oath to rule jointly until the boy comes of age — verses on his lips about life as 'a dream within a dream'. The strongest of the five is Tokugawa Ieyasu, who has waited out both his predecessors; within two years the oath is dead and the armies are gathering for Sekigahara.
