The 26 martyrs of Nagasaki

Alarmed by a Spanish pilot's boast that missionaries went ahead of conquest, Hideyoshi has twenty-six Christians — Japanese converts, Franciscan friars, three teenage boys — marched 600 miles through winter and crucified on a hill above Nagasaki. Japan's century of Christianity is turning; under the Tokugawa the faith will be driven underground for 250 years.
