Normalisation: Husák replaces Dubček

After anti-Soviet riots over an ice-hockey victory give Moscow its pretext, Dubček is removed and Gustáv Husák begins 'normalisation': half a million purged from the party, a generation of writers and academics sent to stoke boilers and wash windows. Dubček ends as a forestry clerk in Slovakia — until 1989 returns him to a balcony over Wenceslas Square.
