The Streltsy revolt of 1682

1682 · Event

Days after the ten-year-old Peter is proclaimed tsar, the Streltsy musketeers storm the Kremlin and butcher his mother's relatives on the palace steps — some in front of the boy himself. The settlement makes him joint tsar under his half-sister's regency; the trauma makes him, by most accounts, the man who will one day destroy the Streltsy and everything old-Muscovite they stood for.
