Travelling with his own Grand Embassy as 'Peter Mikhailov' — a two-metre tsar fooling absolutely no one — Peter spends months as a working shipwright in Zaandam and the Dutch East India Company's Amsterdam yard, then in Deptford, studying everything from anatomy to city planning. No monarch had ever done anything like it; the navy, the capital and the reforms all trace to these workbenches.
