Wasps that turned vegetarian: the first bees appear in the mid-Cretaceous, in step with the flowering plants they pollinate — a partnership that rebuilds terrestrial life from the petals up. The oldest known bee is sealed in Burmese amber; dinosaurs walked past flowers being worked by bees for their last thirty million years.
