In a trade-magazine article, Fairchild's research director Gordon Moore observes that the number of components on a chip has doubled every year and guesses the trend will hold — later revised to every two years. The guess becomes the industry's self-fulfilling metronome: six decades of exponential doubling that turned room-sized computers into free ones, and the quiet engine under every other entry on this timeline.
