Gandhi begins his last fast

In a Delhi of refugee camps and reprisal killings, Gandhi fasts for communal peace (13–18 January 1948); during the fast India agrees to release Pakistan's withheld share of the treasury. Twelve days after it ends he is shot by Nathuram Godse.
