The atrocity at Ma'arra

After storming the Syrian town of Ma'arrat al-Nu'man, starving crusaders massacre the inhabitants — and, by their own chroniclers' horrified admission, eat some of the dead. In Arab memory the episode defines the invaders for good; even crusader sources struggle to explain it away.
