Godfrey refuses a crown in Jerusalem

A week after the city falls, Godfrey of Bouillon is chosen to rule it — and declines the title of king, refusing 'a crown of gold where Christ wore a crown of thorns'. He takes 'Advocate of the Holy Sepulchre' instead; his brother Baldwin, less scrupulous, is crowned king within eighteen months.
