Battle of Gravelines

Off the Flemish coast the English fleet finally closes to killing range, battering the scattered Armada for nine hours with faster ships and faster guns. Five ships are lost, the rest driven towards the sandbanks — until the wind shifts and pushes the fleet into the North Sea, away from Parma's waiting army. The invasion is over.
