The Armada wrecked on the voyage home

Forced to sail home the long way — around Scotland and Ireland — the battered fleet runs into Atlantic gales. Two dozen ships are wrecked on the Irish coast and thousands drown or are killed ashore; barely half the Armada limps back to Spain. The storms kill far more Spaniards than the English guns did.
