The English Armada fails at Lisbon

England sends its own great fleet under Drake to burn the Armada's survivors and raise Portugal in revolt — and fares as badly as Spain had. Disease and bungling cost perhaps 15,000 men, Lisbon never rises, and the war settles into fifteen more years of raid and counter-raid that neither side can win.
