South Vietnam's generals overthrow the president Washington installed and shoot him in the back of an armoured car — a coup the Kennedy White House knew of and blessed. Kennedy, visibly shaken by the murder, is himself dead three weeks later; Saigon burns through nine governments in three years, and America owns the war.
