Britain and France declare war on Russia

For the first time since Waterloo, Britain goes to war with a European great power — and with France, so long the enemy, as an ally. The object is to prop up the Ottoman Empire and cut Russia down to size; the plan, such as it is, becomes an invasion of Crimea.
