Britain and France declare war on Russia

1854 · Event

For the first time since Waterloo, Britain goes to war with a European great power — and for the first time since Agincourt's era, with France as an ally rather than the enemy. The object is to prop up the Ottoman Empire and cut Russia down to size; the plan, such as it is, becomes an invasion of Crimea.
