Russell's dispatches bring down the government

William Howard Russell of The Times — the first modern war correspondent — reports the army freezing, starving and dying of cholera outside Sevastopol while its supplies rot at Balaclava. The public fury his dispatches raise forces Aberdeen's government from office: the first British administration destroyed by newspaper reporting.
