Magellan killed at Mactan

Playing kingmaker in the Philippines, Magellan wades ashore with sixty men to punish a chief named Lapulapu who refuses Spanish suzerainty — and dies in the surf under spears, his overawed allies watching from the boats. The Philippines will remember Lapulapu as its first national hero.
