The Venetian gentleman-volunteer Antonio Pigafetta — one of the eighteen who made it home — writes up the journal he kept every day of the three years: the mutiny, the giants of Patagonia, the starvation, his captain-general's death at Mactan. It is very nearly everything the world knows of the voyage.
