Three years to the month after leaving, one worm-riddled ship under Juan Sebastián Elcano crawls into Sanlúcar with eighteen scarecrow survivors of the 270 — and a cargo of cloves that still turns a profit. They have proved the Earth a globe in the only conclusive way: by sailing round it. The crew, keeping careful count, find they are somehow a day behind Spain.
