Frere's ultimatum to the Zulus

1878 · Event

Without London's authorisation, High Commissioner Bartle Frere hands King Cetshwayo's envoys an ultimatum designed to be refused: disband the Zulu army within thirty days. The Colonial Office learns of its manufactured war by mail, weeks too late to stop it. On day thirty-one, Lord Chelmsford's columns cross into Zululand.
