Court-martialled at his own request to clear his name, the actual author of the bordereau is acquitted after three minutes' deliberation, to cheers — the army has chosen its honour over the truth. Two days later Zola's J'Accuse detonates on the front page of L'Aurore, and France divides, household by household, into Dreyfusards and anti-Dreyfusards.
