Retried before a new court-martial with the world's press watching, Dreyfus is convicted again — 'with extenuating circumstances', a verdict incoherent on its face — and promptly pardoned by a government desperate to end the crisis. He accepts, to the fury of purists: a broken man can fight for vindication better from home than from a cell.
