Galba murdered in the Forum

69 · Event

Seventy-year-old Galba — rigid, stingy, and fatally slow to pay the donative he owed the Praetorians — is butchered in the open Forum seven months into his reign, and his head carried on a pike to Otho, the favourite he had passed over for the succession. Tacitus's epitaph: capax imperii nisi imperasset — everyone thought him fit to rule, until he ruled.
