Beaten by Vitellius's Rhine legions in northern Italy — with his own reinforcements a day's march away — Otho kills himself at dawn to spare Rome further civil war, three months into his reign. The suicide, praised even by his enemies, is the year's one act of grace; his soldiers weep on his pyre, and some follow him.
