The pope annuls the charter

1215 · Event

At John's request, Innocent III — now the king's feudal overlord — declares the charter 'null and void of all validity for ever': extorted by force, shameful and illegal. It has lasted ten weeks. By September England is at open war, and by the next spring the barons have offered the crown to the King of France's son.
