Battle of Lincoln (1217)

1217 · Event

The seventy-year-old William Marshal — 'the greatest knight' — leads the charge through Lincoln's streets and shatters the Franco-rebel army; a sea-fight off Sandwich in August finishes the invasion. Prince Louis is bought out of England, and the treaty that removes him includes the charter's confirmation: the war fought to kill Magna Carta ends by entrenching it.
