The charter reissued for a boy king

1216 · Event

Ten days after Henry III's coronation, the regent William Marshal reissues Magna Carta in the young king's name — the rebels' own programme, adopted by the crown to cut the ground from under them. The document that was a failed peace treaty in June 1215 begins its real career here: as the promise every English king must renew.
