A hundred and twenty-five miles from a panicking London — the king's yacht loaded, the Bank paying out in sixpences — the chiefs overrule their prince: no English Jacobites have risen, no French have landed, and two armies are closing in. The retreat from Derby on 'Black Friday' is the cause's true death-day; Culloden only certifies it.
