Flora MacDonald spirits the prince to Skye

With £30,000 on his head and the redcoats sweeping the isles, the fugitive prince crosses to Skye disguised as 'Betty Burke', spinning-maid to a 24-year-old Flora MacDonald who risks everything and tells her interrogators almost nothing. He escapes to France in September; she gets the Tower, celebrity, and the legend — 'a name that will be mentioned in history,' said Dr Johnson, 'with honour.'
