Fleeing the fallen capital, the imperial column halts at Mawei station — and the starving escort mutinies, kills the chief minister, and refuses to march until the emperor gives up his beloved. Xuanzong has her strangled with a silk cord, then abdicates his throne on the road to exile. Chinese poetry never stops mourning her: 'the everlasting sorrow'.
